New Beginnings, New Opportunities

The carefree, sun-drenched days of summer are now behind us.  The days grow shorter while the nights grow longer and colder.  Trees shed their golden leaves and animals prepare for winter.  Indeed, autumn is perhaps the best time of year (other than New Year's) to take stock of our lives, our careers, our families, and our futures.  What kind of parent/friend/boss do I want to be?  Am I making a difference that matters?  Is my job just something to fill time or does it ignite passion within me?  It is our hope that you find some answers to these and other crucial questions in the outstanding articles that follow.

Additionally, we are pleased to welcome two Senior Associates to our team.  Mike Brenner of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is an educator, consultant, and doctoral student at Columbia University. He has helmed Key Inspirations since the beginning and will be taking on a larger role within our organization.  Antonija Pacek, who lives in Vienna, Austria, is a passionate educator, consultant, inspirational speaker, researcher and trainer in the areas of emotional intelligence, creativity and innovation in organizations, and managing change.  She gives us additional international breadth to better help our clients around the world achieve success.  We look forward to partnering with you.

Transformational Leadership Develops Leaders

by Richard Cox
Traditionally, leaders have followers that are subservient to the leader. By the very definition of leadership, there needs to be followers. But what happens when a leader invests themselves in developing those that follow into leaders? It takes something special to be able to create that in the world today.

Is Autumn a Safe Time for Life Transitions?

By Donna Burick

What does autumn have to do with your life transitions? In a word: duality. Autumn is all about the seamless flow of endings into beginnings. The trick is navigating the gap.

Autumn is a season of letting go to make room for your next cycle to begin. Even good transitions can cause emotional upheaval because we're creatures of habit.

Little Things Can Stop Creativity

By Robert Alan Black, Ph.D., CSP

Lack of money can stop a creative project.

Lack of resources can stop a creative project.

Lack of support can stop a creative project.

Yes, major things or forces can stop creativity. Yet when we look at the history of invention or in general the history of new ideas, we discover that these major forces truly did not stop the devoted, committed, dedicated "creation person."

Leadership As A Performing Art

by Michael Y. Brenner, M.Ed.
At first glance, it may be difficult to fathom what outstanding musicians and outstanding organizational leaders have in common. A more thoughtful examination, however, reveals a number of similarities between the two. Both recognize and tap into the talent and experience of their respective colleagues. Both engage in what we call "intentional listening" – listening purposefully and perceptively – rather than making assumptions or jumping to conclusions. Both focus on asking the right questions and coaxing meaningful answers rather than dictating pre-formed solutions. Both balance action and reflection, recognizing that neither is sufficient to solve problems alone. Perhaps most importantly, both share a key objective: to inspire their audience.

The Art of Influencing Up

by Marshall Goldsmith
"Great wisdom not applied to action and behavior is meaningless data." - Peter Drucker

Knowledge workers are people who know more about what they are doing than their boss does. My guess is that you, like most of my readers, are a knowledge worker. Many knowledge workers (especially those with technical backgrounds) have years of education and experience that enable them to come up with great ideas.
